UPDATE: Changes to private health cover and pilates

As you may be aware, Private health insurers have made significant changes to the eligibility of many healthcare services following a Federal Government decision to exclude ‘natural therapies’ due to a lack of scientific evidence. Pilates has been lumped into this basket.

These changes came into effect on the 1st of April 2019.

Luckily for us, the Australian Physiotherapy Association (APA) has won a battle with the Department of Health agreeing that the use of exercises drawn from Pilates is acceptable and within the scope of physiotherapy practice. This is great news for our patients who are already utilising our classes as it means they will continue to receive rebates.

The way we run our classes will not change much at all as individualised assessment, tailored exercise program design, continuous monitoring and timely progression towards your goals underpin our clinical practice at Ormeau Physio. This is key to compliance with private health insurance and only lends further credibility to our standard of service.

You will however notice a few changes:
  • Our existing members will require an individual re-assessment within 12 weeks of April 1st to ensure that programs are relevant to current health problems and that the program is effective. This will ensure we are complying with the new requirements and allow you to continue to claim for group exercise classes.
  • Our reformers are now located in the gym as programs consisting solely of pilates based exercises will no longer be funded under the new reforms. Our physio’s already prescribe exercises using a number of different pieces of equipment rather than sticking stringently to pilates based exercises but this will become more apparent.
  • Advertising and promotion of sessions must reflect that they are physiotherapy exercise sessions, not pilates. We must therefore use the term “Group Rehabilitation Class” when referring to what once was, clinical pilates.
  • Sessions advertised or promoted as pilates in materials such as timetables, pamphlets or websites will not receive rebates (dictated by the Health Funds).

For more information on the Private Health Insurance reform for Clinical Pilates please visit https://australian.physio/advocacy/phi-pilates-reform
We look forward to seeing you continue your program with us!

Clinical Pilates Classes AKA Group Rehabilitation Classes

Clinical Pilates (now referred to as Group Rehabilitation Classes) are a customised, personalised program/routine overseen by a Physiotherapist.

Our sessions are run by qualified physiotherapists with additional accreditation in Pilates instruction. Take your Pilates training to the next level by physios who understand you anatomically.

We use the latest technology to increase performance.

Yes, we use the latest generation of Pilates reformer machines to accommodate beginner to advanced levels.

Book into an intimate Pilates session - there will be a maximum of 5 participants at each session, ensuring you receive plenty of instruction and care.

To start a Clinical Pilates program, the first step involves undertaking a one-on-one assessment with a Physiotherapist. We then build a customised program to improve upon your baseline competencies and weaknesses.

Our sessions incorporate Pilates at its most modern and effective level – training at Ormeau will take you to the peak of your physical capabilities and work all the muscle groups in their specific region. Pilates at our Upper Ormeau location is more than just a workout, with us it is a way to take you to your absolute physical peak. Moreover, our location means it’s accessible for residents of Beenleigh, Coomera, Logan and Ormeau.
