UPDATE: Changes to private health cover and pilates
These changes came into effect on the 1st of April 2019.
Luckily for us, the Australian Physiotherapy Association (APA) has won a battle with the Department of Health agreeing that the use of exercises drawn from Pilates is acceptable and within the scope of physiotherapy practice. This is great news for our patients who are already utilising our classes as it means they will continue to receive rebates.
The way we run our classes will not change much at all as individualised assessment, tailored exercise program design, continuous monitoring and timely progression towards your goals underpin our clinical practice at Ormeau Physio. This is key to compliance with private health insurance and only lends further credibility to our standard of service.
You will however notice a few changes:
- Our existing members will require an individual re-assessment within 12 weeks of April 1st to ensure that programs are relevant to current health problems and that the program is effective. This will ensure we are complying with the new requirements and allow you to continue to claim for group exercise classes.
- Our reformers are now located in the gym as programs consisting solely of pilates based exercises will no longer be funded under the new reforms. Our physio’s already prescribe exercises using a number of different pieces of equipment rather than sticking stringently to pilates based exercises but this will become more apparent.
- Advertising and promotion of sessions must reflect that they are physiotherapy exercise sessions, not pilates. We must therefore use the term “Group Rehabilitation Class” when referring to what once was, clinical pilates.
- Sessions advertised or promoted as pilates in materials such as timetables, pamphlets or websites will not receive rebates (dictated by the Health Funds).

We look forward to seeing you continue your program with us!
