Instrument Assisted Soft Tissue Mobilisation (IASTM)
What is Instrument Assisted Soft Tissue Mobilisation (IASTM)?
ASTM or Instrument Assisted Soft Tissue Mobilisation refers to the use of a tool or instrument to assist with the manual mobilisation of muscles and fascia.
IASTM helps reorganise the direction of damaged muscle fibers or scar tissue, therefore increasing the resilience of muscles, tendons or ligaments. IASTM can help to improve dysfunctional movement patterns that led to the injury in the first place.
It allows the Physiotherapist to get deeper into damaged muscles, tendons or ligaments. The ability to focus mechanical force along a small contact surface of tissue, and do so with a relatively high level of comfort, is one of the best features of this technique.
At Physio Labs we use the SMARTtools range of instruments.
ESWT is a non- invasive alternative with minimal risk for patients.
